Great Canadian Engineering!

Canada's Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator

This super space "hand" is possible, thanks to engineering!

  • The Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) is sometimes called the Canada Hand.
  • It is a small, two-armed robot that can handle items as tiny as a shoebox.
  • The "hand" is used on the International Space Station to do some of the delicate assembly tasks currently being done by astronauts during space walks.
  • Engineers have made the "hand" extremely accurate; there is no room for error in space!
