Great Canadian Engineering!

Canada's Space Station Arm

This amazing "arm" is possible, thanks to engineering!

  • Canadian engineers and scientists designed and built the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) also known as the Canadarm 2.
  • It is helping build the International Space Station.
  • It is 17 metres long and has seven motorized joints. Mechanical engineers worked with other engineers to make the "arm "move smoothly.
  • It is designed to handle large objects and can lift the entire space shuttle with a fully-loaded cargo bay, arriving from Earth!
  • The Space Station Arm is one of the most important advances in worldwide space engineering and one of Canada’s greatest engineering achievements!
