15.  Why do stars twinkle?

As light from the star moves through the Earth's atmosphere, it passes through numerous pockets of air that are in motion and are at different temperatures. These pockets of air refract the light quickly, first one way and then the other, on a rapid time scale. Do they twinkle? No, they just appear to blink and twinkle.
