The HeartSaver, developed by Dr. Wilbert Keon at the University of Ottawa, is a ventricular assist device, or VAD. It performs the work of a heart's damaged left ventricle. While VADs have been around for 25 years as temporary machines you're hooked up to in the hospital, the HeartSaver is permanent.
