The HeartSaver, developed by Dr. Wilbert Keon at the University of Ottawa, is a ventricular assist device, or VAD. It performs the work of a heart's damaged left ventricle. While VADs have been around for 25 years as temporary machines you're hooked up to in the hospital, the HeartSaver is permanent. Without enough hearts available for transplants, the HeartSaver will be a real LifeSaver.
